This was a plenary presentation at a symposium for Mennonite Brethren higher education leaders from around the world. It was subsequently published as a journal article is an issue of Direction. The essays in that issue were written in honor of the late missiologist, Dr. Paul Hiebert. Dr. Hiebert was not only one of my undergraduate professors, but also a mentor and friend who profoundly influenced my life.

This article grew out of an ongoing study of values, world view and community-based development practice, that several colleagues and I carried out at Cornell University. This particular article essentially summarizes some of the findings of a master’s thesis by Kristen Grace. Dr. Grace currently works in international education at Cornell.

Paulo Friere’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, helped me rethink everything I knew and believed about personal and social transformation. It helped me understand what was I saw around me while working in community-based development in rural Congo.
